My buddy borrowed 15 grand, swearing he’d pay me back “by Friday.” A week drags by, then another. He’s not ghosting me entirely, still picks up the phone, but it’s always the same bullshit: “Just wait, man, I’ll get it soon.” Now I’m torn—should I put the screws to him, or keep the peace? Hell, I could easily snag a microloan in his name with just a snap of his passport.

P26. I’m a debt collector, and at first, I got a real kick out of squeezing every last dime out of deadbeats, drunks, and frail old geezers. It was a power trip, reveling in the fact that I wasn’t a pathetic loser like them, scaring the crap out of them with a wicked grin. But now, damn, my conscience is gnawing at me.
